Passengers on the Gap of Dunloe tour begin their adventure as they are brought from the town of Killarney by coach and dropped off at Kate Kearney’s cottage. This is followed by a boat trip which begins at Lord Brandon’s Cottage and travels along the calm and crystal-clear waters to the Upper Lake, and then down on to the waters by Dinis Cottage. The final leg of the journey brings you to the enchanting Muckross Lake.
Kate Kearney’s Cottage got its name from a former occupant, Kate Kearney, who was known throughout the country as a rare beauty in the times before the Great Famine (1845-1849). This 150-year-old family run establishment lies nestled at the entrance to the Gap of Dunloe and is famous for its hospitality.
From Kate Kearney’s Cottage, it is 11 kilometres (7 miles) trip through the Gap of Dunloe and all guests can choose their preference of travel and take in the wonderful scenery. You can choose to walk and enjoy the closeness of the lush countryside or to let the senses travel back in time as you take a Horse and Trap, offering a delightful experience of Ireland in times gone by.
The boat trip begins at Lord Brandon’s Cottage and traverses down along calmly flowing waters towards the Upper Lake. Gliding along the waterways you will arrive at an area which is known as the Meeting of the Waters and from here descend under the right arch and arrive into the shimmering waters of Dinis Cottage.
Dinis Cottage is situated on what is known as Dinis Island in Killarney National Park and offers breathtaking views of the Middle Lake. The cottage dates back to the 1700s and has been in the past described as a hunting lodge. Today it is home to a tea room with an abundance of delicious refreshments.
Finally, you will travel to Muckross Lake (Middle Lake) and on under Brickeen Bridge and into the Lower Lake. This leisurely glide will bring you to Darby’s Gardens and back by Innisfallen Island and into Ross Bay. Here you can see the majestic Ross Castle and its wonderful surroundings. The collection is organised at this location and you will be transferred back to Killarney town or on to your own accommodation.
